The Village

Long before it was a Village, this part of Nassau County was known as Dongan’s Farm — an 800-acre tract granted in 1683 to Thomas Dongan, the colonial governor of New York, whose estate stood along what is now Lakeville Road. Dutch and English settlers had already been farming the area since the 1640s, as part of the original Town of Hempstead. Growth stayed slow for two centuries; the Long Island Rail Road reached the area in the 1840s, and it wasn’t until a wave of 1920s home-building that the community pushed to govern itself. Residents voted to incorporate on August 19, 1927, and the new Village took its motto — still on the sign today — “A Great Place to Live.”

Walkability

The village core sits along Jericho Turnpike, a short walk from the LIRR station and the Lake Success Shopping Center. The MTA’s Third Track project added pedestrian overpasses at New Hyde Park Road and Covert Avenue and rebuilt the platforms, so getting across the tracks on foot is easier than it used to be. As with any Long Island suburb, day-to-day errands still lean on a car for anything past a few blocks.

Getting Around & Everyday Essentials

The New Hyde Park LIRR station sits on the Main Line/Port Jefferson Branch at New Hyde Park Road and Second Avenue, a short walk from Jericho Turnpike. It was rebuilt between 2021 and 2022 as part of the MTA’s $2.5 billion Third Track project, which added a third track along the corridor, removed three street-level railroad crossings nearby, and gave the station new pedestrian overpasses, ADA ramps, and a rider plaza. NICE Bus routes n24 and n25 also stop at the station. Rail schedules and service patterns change from time to time, so it’s worth checking current LIRR timetables directly rather than assuming a fixed commute time into Manhattan.

For everyday care, Northwell Health’s Long Island Jewish Medical Center is in New Hyde Park itself, with North Shore University Hospital a short drive away in Manhasset. Jericho Turnpike, Union Turnpike, and the Northern State Parkway connect the neighborhood to the rest of Nassau County and into Queens.
